This course, designed for beginners interested in diving right into the world of natural dye color, will introduce the rich and vibrant world of natural dyes. Learn about using natural dye materials such as cochineal, marigold, and cutch to create warm tones, and how to paint with mordants (used to set dyes) such as iron and alum on cotton and silk to attain multiple colors in one dye bath as well as how to mix mordant recipes and discharge pastes. Students will work towards completing at least three explorations that will function as a resource for their future dyeing adventures. Students will receive two 17 x17-inch cotton scarves and one 17 x 17-inch silk scarf. Please see SSA website for a list of suggested materials; please bring a lunch both days.
