Students will explore the ancient tradition of Shibori dying. Shibori is a Japanese term for several methods of dyeing cloth with a pattern by binding, stitching, folding, twisting, compressing, or capping. Some of these methods are known in the West as tie-dye. We will focus on obtaining beautiful blues on cotton and silk using indigo. Students will learn how to make three different organic indigo vats from scratch using fructose, henna, and iron as reduction agents, and while encouraged to sample dye, it will still be possible to complete a small product during the workshop. All materials will be provided by the instructor. Students are welcomed to bring addition natural fiber cloth to add to the dye pot.
